Choose when location markers appear on your map, whether they display labels and halos, and how they respond to clicks or taps.
Configure these settings at the category level to manage locations together. You can override them for individual locations that need different behavior.
This guide also explains how category markers appear in the toolbar when visitors browse a list or open a location.
Where to Find Marker Settings
For a Category
- Open Categories and select a category.
- Expand Marker Display & Behavior.
- Adjust marker visibility, labels, halo, interaction, and content display.
These settings apply to locations assigned to the category, subject to individual location overrides.
For an Individual Location
- Open the location you want to customize.
- Expand Marker Appearance & Behavior.
- Enable the option to override category settings, then adjust the controls for that location.
To change a category marker’s design, such as its icon, shape, color, or size, use Category > Marker Style Customization.
Marker Visibility
Choose one of the following options at the category or individual location level:
Show
Allow the marker to appear on the map. Category filtering, Map Home settings, and other visibility rules still apply.
Hide
Hide the marker from the map without deleting the location. The location’s content can still be displayed, depending on its Display content setting and other visibility rules.
Zoom Range
Display the marker only within a specified zoom range. Select Zoom range to access the zoom controls.
Example: On a campus map, show markers for individual rooms only when visitors zoom in. This keeps the wider map easier to read.
Marker Labels, Halo, and Interaction
Show Marker Label
Allow the location’s label to appear according to the map’s label display settings. Turn this off for markers that do not need a label.
Show Marker Halo
Highlight the marker when a visitor hovers over or selects it. Turn this off if you prefer the marker to appear without the highlight.
Enable Click on Marker
Allow the marker to respond to clicks or taps. Turn this off to make the marker non-clickable.
Display Content
Control whether the location’s details, such as its name, description, and media, appear in the content panel. Turn this off when you want a visual marker without location content.
Example: Create Decorative Markers
For decorative elements such as trees or map symbols, keep the markers visible and turn off:
- Show marker label
- Show marker halo
- Enable click on marker
- Display content
Apply these settings to a category to manage a group of decorative markers together. Learn more about using visual markers.
Category Markers in the Toolbar
The toolbar displays category markers to help visitors identify the categories associated with the current list or location.
Which Categories Appear?
- List view: The toolbar displays markers for the selected categories.
- Location view: The toolbar displays markers for the categories assigned to the open location.
Categories hidden from the filter are also excluded from the toolbar and its expanded list in both views. To control this, go to Category > Filters & Map Home.
Why Can Toolbar Markers Differ from Markers on the Map?
The toolbar uses each category’s own marker design, even when a location has a custom marker or all markers on the map are overridden.
Example: A hotel might use its logo as its marker on the map. When a visitor opens the hotel, the toolbar displays the markers for its assigned categories, such as Hotels and Waterfront.
View the Full Category List
The toolbar displays category markers horizontally. The number of visible markers depends on the available space, so some may be hidden when the list is too long.
To see the full list of category markers and names:
- Desktop: Hover over the category markers in the toolbar.
- Mobile: Long-press the category markers in the toolbar.
The full list appears vertically, with each category’s marker and name.
Marker Display Order
Both the horizontal toolbar and the expanded list follow the category order in the Map Home filter, from top to bottom.
For multilevel categories, this follows each parent and its subcategories before moving to the next parent. Only categories relevant to the current view are included, and categories hidden from the filter are excluded.
To change this order, adjust the category display order.
Related Category Settings
Two additional category sections control how markers are presented:
Filters & Map Home
Open Category > Filters & Map Home to:
- Show or hide the category in the filter panel and in list and location toolbars.
- Show or hide its location markers on Map Home.
- Configure trigger locations that reveal the category’s markers when opened.
Hide on Map Home keeps markers hidden on the home view. They can still appear when the category is selected or a configured trigger location is opened, subject to other visibility rules.
Category Marker Usage
Open Category > Category Marker Usage to choose where the category’s marker design can be used:
- Use in filters and on map
- Use on map only
- Do not use this marker
Do not use this marker excludes that category’s marker design from filters and from marker selection for locations. Locations can still appear using another eligible category’s marker, the default ? marker, or a marker override.
To hide the actual location markers, use Hide under Marker Display & Behavior.
For details and examples, see Customize Categories: Markers, Filters, and Map Display.
Why Is a Marker Not Appearing on the Map?
- Check that marker visibility is not set to Hide.
- If a zoom range is configured, make sure the current zoom level is within that range.
- Check whether active category filters exclude the location.
- On Map Home, check Category > Filters & Map Home.
- Check whether the location overrides its category’s marker display settings.
If a marker appears with an unexpected design, check Category Marker Usage, category order, parent/subcategory marker settings, and any custom or global marker overrides.
