What is GDPR?
The General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, is a European privacy law going into effect on May 25, 2018.
The GDPR regulates how companies like Mapme can collect, use, and retain personal data. Since people in the EU can either visit interactive maps build with Mapme or create interactive maps build with Mapme, Mapme and its customers are both subject to the GDPR.
What is “personal data”?
Under the GDPR, personal data is any information which could be used to uniquely identify an individual. This includes traditional personal data such as dates of birth, names, physical addresses, email addresses as well as location data, biometric data and more.
What has Mapme done to ensure compliance with the GDPR?
Contrarily to a common trend with technology companies, at Mapme, we have always strive to collect as little information as possible from our customers. We only collect information that is absolutely necessary to provide our service. This enabled us to comply with the GDPR with minimal changes to our existing processes.
Privacy Policy
We updated our privacy policy to be fully transparent. We created tables to provide a simple view of the information we collect, why we collect it and how. .We segmented our data process based on three different group of users
- Users’ users: people who view the maps either embedded on a website, on social media or through a direct URL to the map.
- Website visitors: people who visit our website to learn about the Mapme service
- Users: people who create a Mapme account in order to build an interactive map
Platform Changes
We implemented changes to enable our customers to easily meet their GDPR requirements. For example, we anonymized the IP addresses processed and collected with Google Analytics.
Data Processing Agreement
We’ve updated our Data Processing Agreements (DPA), Strong data protection commitments are a key part of GDPR’s requirements. Our updated data processing agreement reflects our privacy commitments. The DPA is available for customers to sign upon request.
