Edit and control image display

You can rotate and crop individual images, control how they are displayed, and set default image display modes for your entire map.

For the best results, we recommend using images with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 1920 × 1080 px. This provides excellent image quality on both desktop and mobile devices.

If an image has a different aspect ratio, you can crop it manually or choose how it fits within the available image area.

Set the default image display for your map

Map-wide settings let you control how images are displayed across your map without editing each image individually.

  1. Open the Editor.
  2. Go to Appearance > Media.
  3. Choose a display mode for Main images and Thumbnails.

The following display modes are available:

  • Fill – Fills the entire image area. Parts of the image may be cropped when the image and display area have different aspect ratios.
  • Fit – Displays the entire cropped image. Empty space may appear around the image when its aspect ratio differs from the display area.

Main images

The Main images setting controls images displayed in fixed-size main image areas, such as cover images in cards and story layouts.

You can override this setting for an individual image when needed.

Thumbnails

The Thumbnails setting controls images displayed in thumbnail areas, including card and list thumbnails.

This is a map-wide setting and cannot be overridden for an individual image.

Note: Flexible image areas, such as the expanded gallery, display the entire edited image and are not affected by these settings.

Open the image editor

  1. Click Image, video, PDF, 3D tour… to open the media gallery for the location.
  2. Hover over the image you want to edit.
  3. Click the Edit icon.

The image editor is organized into three tabs:

  • Rotate/Crop – Rotate or crop the image.
  • Fill/Fit – Use the map setting or override it for this image.
  • Caption/Credit – Add a caption and image credit.

Rotate or crop an image

Open the Rotate/Crop tab to change the image orientation or select a custom crop area.

Rotate the image

Click Rotate 90° to rotate the image 90 degrees clockwise. Click it again to continue rotating the image.

Crop the image

  1. Turn on Crop image.
  2. Drag the crop handles to select the part of the image you want to keep.
  3. Resize and reposition the crop area as needed.

Your crop changes are saved automatically.

The cropped version is used wherever the image appears, including in cards, galleries, and thumbnails. The selected Fill or Fit mode determines how the cropped version is displayed within each image area.

Automatic display mode change

If the image is currently displayed using Fill, starting a custom crop automatically creates an individual Fit setting. This ensures that the entire cropped area remains visible in main image views.

The following message confirms the change:

Image display set to Fit so the entire cropped area remains visible.

After cropping, you can open the Fill/Fit tab and select Map default, Fit, or Fill.

Override the display mode for an individual image

Open the Fill/Fit tab to control how the image is displayed in main image areas.

The following options are available:

  • Map default – Uses the map-wide Main images setting. The current setting appears in parentheses, such as Map default (Fit). If the map-wide setting changes later, the image follows the new setting.
  • Fit – Displays the entire edited image. Empty space may appear around it.
  • Fill – Fills the entire image area. Parts of the image may be cropped.

Selecting Fit or Fill creates an override for that image. The image keeps the selected mode even if the map-wide setting changes.

To remove the override and make the image follow future map-wide changes, select Map default.

The individual image setting affects main image areas only. Thumbnails always use the map-wide Thumbnails setting.

The display mode does not modify or remove your custom crop. It only controls how the cropped image fits within the available area.
